Europäische Parlamentarier*innen verurteilen drohenden Mandatsentzug für israelischen Abgeordneten Ofer

17 Abgeordnete des Europäischen Parlaments wenden sich in einem heute veröffentlichten offenen Brief an Kommissionspräsidentin von der Leyen und den EU-Außenbeauftragten Borell mit der Forderung, dem drohenden Ausschluss des Abgeordneten Ofer Cassif aus dem israelischen Parlament entgegenzutreten. Etwa 70 Parlamentarier um den rechten Abgeordneten Oded Forer wollen Ofer Cassif aus der Knesset ausschließen lassen, weil er sich als langjähriger Friedensaktivist positiv zur südafrikanischen Klage gegen sein Land vor dem Internationalen Gerichtshof ausgesprochen hat.

Özlem Alev Demirel, außen- und friedenspolitische Sprecherin von Die Linke im Europaparlament und gemeinsam mit Marc Botenga, belgischer EU-Abgeordneter der PTB, Initiatorin des Briefes, erklärt dazu:
 
„Es ist ein Skandal, wie im israelischen Parlament kritische Stimmen unter Druck gesetzt werden. Im Gegenteil: für einen nachhaltigen Frieden im israelisch-palästinensischen Konflikt braucht es diese Friedensstimmen, wenn wir endlich eine nachhaltige Friedenslösung wollen. Deshalb muss die EU an dieser Stelle auch deutlich machen, dass so ein Umgang mit Kriegsgegner*innen und generell mit Andersdenkenden nicht akzeptabel ist.“
 
„Darüber hinaus muss sich auch die EU endlich deutlich und mit einer Stimme für einen sofortigen Waffenstillstand aussprechen. Wenn Mitgliedstaaten wie Deutschland bei den humanitären Verbrechen in Gaza noch die Waffenausfuhren vervielfachen, dann ist das ein unhaltbarer Zustand, der übrigens auch dem rechtlich bindenden Gemeinsamen Standpunkt über Waffenexporte wiederspricht.“

Dear Mr. Borrell,
 
Israeli MP Ofer Cassif might be expelled from the Knesset, if right-wing MP Oded Forer and 69 other Knesset MPs have their way.
 
MP Ofer's "crime", which 70 members of the Knesset want to expel him for, is that he supported the South African lawsuit before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against the Israeli government over possible genocide in Gaza.
 
MP Ofer has been a peace activist for decades, speaking out against settlement construction and in favour of peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians, in line with the positions of the European Union.
 
He has always spoken out against violence, both by Palestinians and Israelis, and has advocated a negotiated solution. Ofer's criticism of the bombing of Gaza is consistent with the positions of Israeli and Palestinian human rights activists as well as human rights organizations from around the world.
 
Be this as it may, one does not have to share Ofer's political positions to be of the opinion that the expulsion of an Israeli politician in favour of peace from the Knesset would be a disgrace.
 
This would not only permanently ban a Member of Parliament from the parliamentary process, it would also open Pandora's box and enable the exclusion of other members of parliament who clearly stand against settlement construction and war in the future; in particular, members of the Palestinian minority in Israel would be at risk.
 
We therefore call on Ursula von der Leyen and Josep Borrell:
 
1. To make it clear to the Israeli government that they strongly oppose the expulsion of a member of parliament and to call on them to prevent it.
 
2. To campaign for the protection of parliamentary and democratic rights in Israel.
 
Furthermore, we would like to request Roberta Metsola to invite Ofer Cassif to the EU Parliament and show solidarity with him.
